It was a dramatic moment as 62-year-old man, Lukman Babatunde, was, on Monday, March 25, granted a N150,000 bail by the magistrates court in Lagos having being charged for alleged stealing at a nearby store.

Vanguard reports that the prosecutor, Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye, had told the court that Babatunde committed the offence at 400p.m on March 16, at Trolleys Superstore at 2, Industrial Avenue, Yaba Lagos. She also added that the 62-year-old man burst into the store and stole four bottles of Black Label wine valued at N31, 200 after posing as a customer.

Among other things, Legit.ng gathers that Babatunde also stole a packet of Dettol soap worth N3, 000, six pieces of Sensodyne toothpaste valued at N5, 100, and a loaf of bread worth N300. He was caught through a closed-circuit television camera, and arrested by the police.

Explaining the case before the magistrate, the prosecuting officer said: “My lord, the defendant pretended to be a shopper while stuffing the stolen items into his jacket. “He got to the counter and paid for only a bowl of ice cream, attempting to make away with the stolen items in his jacket. When he was searched, the items were recovered from him.''

In her judgement, Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere ruled that the offence contravenes section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos state, 2015, and is punishable with a three-year jail term. She, however, granted the defendant a bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos state government. She adjourned the case to June 26 for mention.
