The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has hinted at his knowledge of the genesis of the Boko Haram sect that has been terrorizing the country for some years.
According to Abubakar, the group started as political thugs being used by politicians and were later abandoned by the politicians with no work to do.
Abubakar gave this hint in an interview with The African Reports, which he shared on his verified Twitter handle, @atiku.
“I happen to know how Boko Haram came into being. They were offshoots of political thuggery. Politicians used those boys in Boko Haram to win elections and then abandoned them and then there were no jobs for the”, he said.
The former vice president explained that similar events played out in the Niger Delta leading to the evolution of militants.
“It was the same thing with the Niger Delta. In 1998, I saw it myself and I warned people”.
On solving the menace, he said, It’s going to be a multifaceted approach. It will involve negotiations. It will involve military action.”
