Tukur, according to Okpala’s statement, was on his way to Owerri to receive a doctorate degree award from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri.
As the elder stateman’s convoy of four vehicles entered the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport road, a Toyota Hilux van with tinted glasses emerged and attempted to break into the convoy. Tukur’s security escort prevented the attempts of Toyota’s unidentified drivers get to Tukur’s jeep.
Three vehicles of Tukur’s convoy, including that of Tukur’s, were damaged in the process.
The occupants of the Hilux fought the security guards and demanded for Tukur. Eventually, the unidentified gunmen overpowered the security, but Tukur and his driver escaped and proceeded to the airport.
The police have been notified of the incident.
Bamanga Tukur, born on 15 September, 1935, is a prominent Nigerian politician who served as minister for industries in the administration of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s. He announced his retirement from politics in September 2015.
