The appointment of an acting VC is necessary to avert the vacuum in the running of the university administration. The tenure of Prof #Obafunwa who since March 16 has been operating from outside his office ends on Saturday, October 31.
Investigations revealed that about six Professors have submitted applications to replace Prof Obafunwa who is yet to indicate interest.
The acting VC is expected to resume work on Monday, November 2 by which time the Admin block 1 and the Senate building will have been opened. The two buildings have been under lock since March 16.
Going by tradition, the governing council may appoint the deputy VC (Administration), Prof Fidelis #Njokanma as the acting VC but whether it will be for six months as the law stipulate in unclear.
Investigations revealed that the Prof Adebayo Ninalowo-led governing council is expected to meet this week and the body may appoint the acting VC to run the affairs of the 32-year-old-university.
At a briefing on Tuesday to mark the exit of Prof Obafunwa, the four staff unions urged the governing council to appoint an acting VC.
The chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Mr. #Agosu Albert, said ‘’the union expects to see a road map that would usher in an acting VC prior to completing the process of the appointment of a new VC.
‘’We are not in doubt that the governing council will do the right thing within the shortest time to announce an acting #VC without creating any vacuum’’, he stated.
On the VC race, it was gathered that six professors have indicated interest to become the 8th VC. Two are from #LASU while four from outside the university.
The two from within LASU, it was gathered are both former deputy VC and one regularly Professor that has applied for the plum job in the last eight years while one is a former Law lecturer form LASU but now in another university.
One of the former deputy VCs that applied for the position had worked with the outgoing VC.
