NEWS PUNCH——–Palpable tension is currently in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, Osun State, South West Nigeria following the announcement of the the new Ooni of Ile-Ife early this morning by the government of State of Osun
The Osun State Government has this morning approved and announced the Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as new Ooni of Ile-Ife, following Ife Kingmakers decision and subsequent letter to the government to install the the Prince as the New Ife King.
A copy of the letter dated October 24 was made available to newsmen in Osogbo by the Head, Bereau of Communication, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon at about 2.43 a.m.
The three paragraph letter reads: “The governor of the state of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has approved the appointment of a new Ooni of Ife.
“He is Prince Adeyeye Enitan of the Giesi Ruling House of Ile-Ife, State Of Osun.”
“This choice follows the completion of the due process by the kingmakers and the communication of their decisions to the state government.”
Ogunwusi succeeds Oba Okunade Sijuwade who died on July 28, 2015. Sijuwade was aged 85.
Meanwhile, before earlier today’s announcement of Prince Adeye Enitan Ogunwusi the the King-elec, Kingmakers in Ile Ife have reportedly sought for police and other security agents protection in preparation for the announcement of new Ooni of Ife, New Telegraph reported
Security sources, however, stated that, they have been placed on red alert on the matter and that there would be no cause for alarm after the pronouncement of the name of the next monarch. The move for the request for the police protection is said to have been made by the kingmakers so as to prevent themselves from being molested or maltreated by the aggrieved royal princes who may not be considered for the position at the end of the day.
Informed sources further hinted that, since some ruling houses got to know that the D-day for the announcement of person to occupy the vacant seat has drawn closer, they have been getting across to kingmakers with juicy things so as to win their favours while taking decision of who occupies the throne. Investigations in the ancient town yesterday revealed that, the nook and crannies of the town are now beefed up with security while residents now move with caution.
A palace source, who preferred anonymity, also stressed that, all necessary things to be done before selection of the monarch had been concluded and assured that, in no distance time, the next Ooni Of Ife’s name would be announced. When asked whether he was aware that, the kingmakers had recruited the services of security agents before any announcement, he said, that would be necessary because Ife atmosphere is charged for no one knows where the pendulum is swinging to.
He disclosed further that, apart from the services of security agents that would be engaged, that of vigilante groups and local hunters would as well be needed to combat miscreants and evilperpetrators that might want to be used to disturb the peace of the town after the announcement. It would be recalled that, last Friday, an Osun State High Court presided over by the Chief Judge, Hon Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo, rejected a suit seeking an order of the court to set aside 1980 declaration in the process of enthronement of new Ooni Of Ife.
Sooko Adegoke and Prince Marcus Adebola Akimoyero, had on behalf of Lafogido Ruling House of Ile-Ife, dragged Governor Rauf Aregbesola; the Obalufe of Ile-Ife, Oba Solomon Omisakin (now late) and Lowa of Ife, Chief Joseph Ijaodola, on the decision to allow only Giesi Ruling House present the next Ooni. At the resumed hearing of the case, Counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr Soji Oyetayo, sought an order of the court to stop the defendants from embarking on processes to select the new Ooni from Giesi Ruling House because of the alleged flaw in the 1980 declaration. The counsel argued that, the declaration was lopsided, unjust, unconstitutional and unfair and prayed the court to disregard it
